Frequently Asked Questions About Ultrasound Imaging
What is the Difference Between 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Ultrasounds?
- 2D: A 2D ultrasound is what most people may imagine when they think about getting an ultrasound of their baby. It’s the traditional black and white image that provides a very basic skeletal outline of your baby. When you’re at your ultrasound appointment, you will often get a 2D visual in which you can see the baby’s movements and reveal the gender of the baby.
- 3D: Modern technology has now made it possible to get a clearer image of the baby’s face. A 3D ultrasound allows parents to get an idea of the contours of the baby or the size and shape of their features. 3D ultrasounds are computer enhanced to give the image some color, but it’s not the actual color of your baby.
- 4D: A 4D ultrasound is essentially a video of the 3D images together. This allows parents to see their baby move and make facial expressions.
- HD: For the most realistic view of your baby, you’ll want to schedule an HD ultrasound. This service utilizes the most advanced technology and a virtual light source to create an image that is defined and realistic.
When Can I Schedule a 3D Ultrasound?
For a 3D ultrasound that allows you to see your baby’s face, Hey Baby! can schedule an appointment after 24 weeks. 3D technology can be used at 14 weeks, but this would simply be to reveal the gender of your baby. For a clearer image of your baby’s facial features, it’s best to wait a little longer until they are a little further along in their development.
Why Would I Want to Schedule a 3D Ultrasound?
3D ultrasounds are considered an elective service, but there are various reasons why parents-to-be are eager to get their ultrasound appointments scheduled. These ultrasound imaging appointments allow parents to get a visual of what their baby will look like and in some cases, can help determine if there are certain abnormalities, such as cleft lip. At Hey Baby!, our staff is highly trained and experienced and can ensure that your ultrasound appointment goes smoothly.
Will I Be Able to See My Baby’s Face Clearly?
While our ultrasound technicians will do our best to capture a full image of your baby’s face, we can’t always predict what mood your baby will be in. As you have probably experienced yourself, babies like to move around while they’re in the womb! If your baby is facing down at the time of your appointment, we can reschedule your appointment. But there are still no guarantees that we’ll get that perfect picture.
If you’re expecting a baby, the Hey Baby! team wants to say congratulations! And if you’re eager to learn the gender of your baby or see him or her for the first time, Hey Baby! can’t wait to make that happen for you. We love being able to share in this beautiful moment with you and your family, and we’ll do everything we can to make the experience truly memorable.
