DIFFERENCE IN ULTRASOUNDS

Ultrasounds are sound waves that, when they hit an object, bounce off and form a picture of that object. Ultrasound was first used in 1956 for medical purposes. However, an Italian biologist is most often credited with its invention in the late 1800s.

A two-dimension ultrasound, or 2D, is known as traditional ultrasounds as these are what was used in prenatal diagnoses before the recent invention of 3D and 4D ultrasounds. 2D ultrasounds will give you the outline of your baby and will look very flat. However, your doctor will be able to see the internal organs of the baby, which can help in diagnosing heart defects, kidney problems, and other prenatal conditions.

A three-dimensional ultrasound, or 3D, will allow you to see features of your baby, including facial features. These images are clearer, which allows doctors the ability to look for more conditions the baby may have, such as a cleft lip.

A four-dimensional ultrasound, or 4D, is comparable to a movie. You will have the clarity of a 3D ultrasound, but you can also see the baby move as well. These baby ultrasounds produce moving images of your baby, which we have to say, is pretty neat.

Why Get a Baby Ultrasound?

Baby ultrasounds, while not required while pregnant, are absolutely amazing in their own right. Seeing your baby growing inside of you and having the reassurance that they are happy and well can give you peace of mind. Plus, there are many benefits to ultrasounds, such as:

  • Showing the number of babies you are having

  • Looking for signs of genetic conditions, such as Down's syndrome

  • Looking for any signs of complications during birth, such as your baby has not turned yet

  • Seeing the growth of your baby,

  • Monitoring the levels of your amniotic fluid
